ORIGIN began around 1999/2000 as a pilot project, after consulting young people and parents that lived near to where we are based in South London.

At a conceptual level, ORIGIN is an African-centred rites of passage programme that work with families to raise Sons. We see great value in the African proverb, ‘If the young men are not initiated into the Village, they will burn it down, just to feel its warmth’.

 We deliver an empowering programme by viewing young people as heirs and custodians of a rich cultural heritage. We recognise that awareness and readiness to be confident young men of African descent does not come automatically. So we as men and as a community take responsibility for developing and delivering the ORIGIN Rites of Passage programme.
